The Lagotto Romagnolo (plural: Lagotti Romagnoli) is an ancient breed, originating in the Romagna region of Italy. They were initially used as waterfowl retrievers for hunters in the marshlands. When the marshlands dried up in the 19th century, they were adapted to hunt for the elusive truffle. Their keen sense of smell made them the perfect truffle hunting companion.
Today, the Lagotto is a loyal, loving and scent driven companion. These energetic dogs excel in a variety of activities, including AKC scentwork/nosework, dock diving, Fast CAT, rally, agility and yes, even truffle hunting in the United States! They are eager to join their family in whatever the activity of the day is, whether it is paddleboarding, hiking or playing a game of fetch.
There is no such thing as a perfect dog…or a perfect dog breed!
Lagotti are energetic with lots of working drive, meaning they need a job. They do best when they are given mentally stimulating tasks or activities whether that is scentwork, agility, rally etc. This is not a breed that should be left alone all day while its family is at work/school. They will become easily bored and will find their own ways of amusing themselves at home while you are gone.
Many people love the idea of a non shedding dog but are not prepared for the coat maintenance. They need regular grooming to keep their coats mat free. The longer the hair, the more debris their coat picks up and brings into the house.
They are a vocal breed with plenty of opinions and they are alert barkers.
They are a sensitive breed. This is not a breed that does well with harsh training methods. Positive reinforcement, and early socialization is key to producing a well adjusted and happy companion!
